Stay (2012)

Accommodation in Kyiv

As someone who lives in Kyiv, it is unusual to stay in hotels. But as in all major cities there is a wide range of accommodation and websites can help you decide where's best to stay.
Cost range: Good, clean purpose-built hotels can start at as little as €25 a night. Family hotels can cost about €40 a night and five stars €100 upwards.
When choosing your hotel perhaps think about what you want and where you want to be. If your focus is just on the song contest, and if the accommodation itself is not that important. Then you could stay close to the exhibition centre. Opposite the exhibition centre there is the Hotel Turist or Adria Hotel, which is a former Soviet high-rise.

Similarly on that side of the River is Hotel Slavutych, another 1970s structure. And finally one metro stop away is the Bakkara Art Hotel. This hotel floats on the River Dnipro. There may be more hotels in the vicinity.

All of these hotels are on the left bank, which is a super modern and functional dormitary area for Kyiv.
If you want to soak up the historical town and live somewhere in order to get in touch with your inner Ukrainian, then you need to look at the right bank. Khreshchatik, Teatralna, Zolotoi Vorota, Arsenalna and Ploscha Lva Tolstova metro stations would all give you access to the red metro line that would take you directly to the venue along with a central location.
But in reality you could get to this venue in 30 minutes via the metro from almost anywhere in the city.
There are a wide range of good options further out. Several hotels are boutique hotels. One is by the Opera, another is in the arty district of Vozdvizhenska.

There are all of the major hotel chains if staying somewhere familiar is your thing.
Equally Ukraine's crisis economy means there are many spare business lets available in very central locations. These will probably also be available via B&B and rental websites. Monthly rentals for international businesspeople is around €600 for a one-bedroom flat.
TIP: Ukrainian interior decor taste can be ultra modern, it can also be quite chintzy. If this is likely to cause you some concern, check the room photos before you book.

If you know Kyiv well where would you recommend?

Addicted to You (2002)  Ukrainian Pie   KYIV DESTINATION: Pie shops If you stand by St Sophia's cathedral in the upper city, you will notice a pink tower in a nearby street.  This is the 19th century fire station watch tower. Diagonally opposite the forestation is a restaurant called Штолле - or Stolle  http://stolle.com.ua/en/ .   This chain specialises in Ukrainian pies (Pirog). Pie is a very complex affair in Ukraine with a variety of vegetarian, meat, fish and fruit centres. Pie is a meal in itself. The fillings combine vegetables and meat and flavours. Examples include Cowberry pie, Rabbit and Mushrooms Pie, Herring Pie, Cherry Pie and Brocilli Pie, among others. Each pie is enormous and can feed a large family. In Stolle you can buy slices or a whole pie to eat in or take away. The store / restaurant is currently undergoing refurbishment ready for Eurovision! If you prefer something smaller than a Pirog, then you can try little pies, or Pi
Believe'n'Peace (1999)  Maltese Connections  EUROVISION COUNTRY: Malta KYIV DESTINATIONS: Maltese Restaurant Porto; Dog friendly cafes in Kyiv Unlike many other European cities, Kyiv can boast of it's own Maltese restaurant, called Porto  http://porto-rest.com/en/ , which provides excellent (if expensive - at €20 a person) fish and southern Mediterranean dishes. It has been completely renovated last year. Below we show the before on the left, and the after on the right. Porto is located very close to Olympiska metro station, a corner kick away from the main football stadium. All is not what it seems, however, as the chef/owner is Serbian!
