Shota is considered to be the 12th century version of Shakespeare in Georgia. The poet's most famous work is The Knight in the Panther Skin. There is also a statue to Shota Rustaveli in this square of fantasy modernist sculptures and stone benches. The park was opened in 2007 by the then President of Georgia, who is now both wanted by the authorities in his homeland and also a Governor of a region of southern Ukraine.
