This is not to say the community has not suffered under the Tsarist pogroms, Communist repression and Nazi occupation. But despite this the Jewish community still thrives today. You can make a pilgrimage to Golda Meir's house on 5a Basseynaya St in the centre of town. Nearby is the 19th Century synagogue, which is now the focal point for the Jewish community.
