Ukraine was once a part of Greece. The Ukrainian port of Odessa on the Black Sea was originally the Greek town of Odysseus. Other Greek ruins can be found across the Black Sea Coast. The Greeks have been in Ukraine for 2,600 years. Today there are just shy of 100,000 of them still here. They now are to be found in the east and south of the country, near the cities of and Mariupol. Many also used to live in Donetsk, at the centre of the conflict zone. The Greeks settled on the Black Sea and formed trading colonies in the 6th century BC. Examples of their settlements can be found in the National Museum of Ukraine. http://nmiu.com.ua
But Ukrainians also share a religious link through the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. This faith was established in the 16th century to unify the Catholic and Orthodox faiths, who had not been talking to each other for 500 years by that time.
The modern cathedral opposite the Eurovision venue is one example of a Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church. http://kyivsobor.ugcc.org.ua The church is brand new because the religion was banned after the second world war making it the single largest banned religious community in the world. The religion was only restored in 1987.
