Thunder and Lightening (2010)

Bulgarian, Bosnian, Ukrainian God Perun

EUROVISION COUNTRIES: Bulgaria and Bosnia Hercegovinia
KYIV DESTINATION: National History Museum, Kievan Rus Park, Kyiv City Museum

Ukraine, Bosnia and Bulgaria (along with Belarus and Russia) share an ancient slavic God - Perun.
He was the King of Gods and like Zeus and Thor he was linked to thunder and lightening.
You can see in several places over Kyiv.
In Bulgaria and Bosnia many mountain tops, associated with lightening strikes, are called or sound similar to Perun. An iris in the region is also called Perun's flower, as it was believed to only grow where lightening had struck.
In Ukraine also Perun was a revered God before Christianisation and one Kyiv prince erected seven statues of Perun on his accession. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perun
One gold-painted replica statue stands outside the very first settlement site of Kyiv - currently the location of the National History Museum. http://www.nmiu.com.ua/index.php/en/ You will see people worshipping there to this day. Offerings are often found at the foot of the statue.
Another can be found at the Old Kiev Park Kievan Rus theme park. http://parkkyivrus.com/ua/ which is a 30 minute drive outside Kyiv.

But there are two amazing original survivors in the Kiev City Museum. http://kyivhistorymuseum.org

Discovered during some building work, this original post has several jaw bones still embedded into the wood. Archeologists  say these are animal bones from sacrifices, and their blood was traditionally poured over the statue. This post definitely looks blood-stained. This must date to before 988 when Vladimir the Great converted to Christianity and demanded all images of Perun be destroyed.

There are around 140,000 ethnic Bulgarians still living in southern Ukraine.

Addicted to You (2002)  Ukrainian Pie   KYIV DESTINATION: Pie shops If you stand by St Sophia's cathedral in the upper city, you will notice a pink tower in a nearby street.  This is the 19th century fire station watch tower. Diagonally opposite the forestation is a restaurant called Штолле - or Stolle  http://stolle.com.ua/en/ .   This chain specialises in Ukrainian pies (Pirog). Pie is a very complex affair in Ukraine with a variety of vegetarian, meat, fish and fruit centres. Pie is a meal in itself. The fillings combine vegetables and meat and flavours. Examples include Cowberry pie, Rabbit and Mushrooms Pie, Herring Pie, Cherry Pie and Brocilli Pie, among others. Each pie is enormous and can feed a large family. In Stolle you can buy slices or a whole pie to eat in or take away. The store / restaurant is currently undergoing refurbishment ready for Eurovision! If you prefer something smaller than a Pirog, then you can try little pies, or Pi
Believe'n'Peace (1999)  Maltese Connections  EUROVISION COUNTRY: Malta KYIV DESTINATIONS: Maltese Restaurant Porto; Dog friendly cafes in Kyiv Unlike many other European cities, Kyiv can boast of it's own Maltese restaurant, called Porto  http://porto-rest.com/en/ , which provides excellent (if expensive - at €20 a person) fish and southern Mediterranean dishes. It has been completely renovated last year. Below we show the before on the left, and the after on the right. Porto is located very close to Olympiska metro station, a corner kick away from the main football stadium. All is not what it seems, however, as the chef/owner is Serbian!
