Tie Uuteen Paivaan (1971)
KYIV DESTINATION: Tampere St, Comfort Town
In 1954 Kyiv signed its first twinning agreement with Finland's second city, Tampere. A further 40 cities have followed suit since. http://primetour.ua/en/company/articles/Goroda----pobratimyi-Kieva-.html
In its honour Kyiv named one of its streets 'Tamperenkatu', Tampere St in Finnish in 1961.
This is a regular suburban street on the left bank, but it has a couple of sights of interest.
The start of the road features a new church complex dedicated to the engineers who died in saving the Chernobyl nuclear power station. There are several memorials in the church parkland and on the square opposite.
There is also a corner store covered in an elaborate chicken-design mosaic opposite the church.
You may even get lucky and see nordic ski fans rollerblade down the street in summer.
The road then crosses a major road and concludes in probably one of Kiev's most unusual housing complexes - Comfort Town (see below). Built on the site of a disused factory, Comfort Town is a gated community that hugs a private secondary school. What is unusual is the vibrant colours that cover not only the walls but continue over the rooves of the houses there.
